November Workshop Readies Horticulture Businesses With Innovative Industry Knowledge
Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2025
WICHITA – The K-State Extension Office in Sedgwick County is preparing to support horticulture businesses from across the state during its upcoming 2025 Commercial Pesticide Applicator Training Workshop. This event will provide commercial horticulture businesses with up-to-date scientific research from speakers across the region. This workshop helps ensure that applicators have the necessary expertise to apply pesticides safely and effectively, protecting both the environment and the community. Participating businesses will also improve employee expertise, reduce risks, and enhance the delivery of horticultural services provided to the community.
The 2025 Commercial Pesticide Applicator Training Workshop will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center, located at 7001 W. 21st Street N., Wichita, KS. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. This full-day training is intended for all horticultural professionals who manage lawns, landscapes, trees, golf courses, public parks, and athletic fields. The workshop provides continuing education opportunities and is designed to keep certified applicators current with the latest regulations, application methods, and safety practices.
Under Kansas law, anyone who commercially applies pesticides to control weeds, insects, plant diseases, or other pests must be certified through the Kansas Department of Agriculture in order to ensure the safe use of pesticides within our communities. Once certified, applicators are required to renew their licenses every three years. Ongoing trainings such as this, not only support applicators in meeting state requirements, but also give clients and the community confidence that their properties are being treated by knowledgeable, qualified professionals.
The 2025 Commercial Pesticide Applicator Training Workshop, hosted by the K-State Extension office in Sedgwick County, is the largest training opportunity in South Central Kansas for commercial pesticide applicators. Training topics will include weed, insect, and plant disease identification and management for turfgrass and ornamental plants, as well as an update on Kansas laws for pesticide applicators. A brochure with complete schedule details and event information can be found online.
Up to 6 hours of continuing education credits and 1 core credit will be offered at this event for those with pesticide applicator licenses related to lawn and landscape care (category 3). For arborists certified with the International Society of Arboriculture, up to 8 hours of continuing education credit will be offered.
The registration fee is $70.00 through November 5, 2025. After November 5th, registration will be $85.00 per person. Registration will close on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. Participants can register online here.
